Moving Beyond Excel: An Introduction to Databases for Complex Data

In the world of big data and automated data collection, data sets are larger and more complex than ever before. Yet oftentimes, we don’t have the skills necessary to manage this data, so we resort to our old, familiar friend… Microsoft Excel. While Excel is a great program for many things, it is slow for very large data sets and was not designed to handle multi-dimensional data sets. In this two-hour workshop, we will introduce you to general concepts of databases using Microsoft Access. We will learn how to import tables from Excel into Access, how to create relationships between tables, and how to generate basic queries using both the Query Design Wizard and manually writing the command in SQL language. No prior experience with databases or MS Access is necessary.
