Information Landscape Workshops | Vibe Coding 101: An Introduction to AI-Assisted Coding

In this workshop, we'll explore the brief but eventful history of vibe coding, examine/compare the tools and techniques that make it work, and discuss best practices for using AI to build useful applications. Then we'll put theory into practice: together, we'll vibe code a working application, demonstrating how the skills we learn translate into this new form of making.

In February 2025, AI researcher Andrej Karpathy coined the term "vibe coding" to describe a new approach to programming: describing what you want in plain English and letting AI generate the code. The term became Collins Dictionary's 2025 Word of the Year, and the practice has since exploded, with some estimates suggesting that over 80% of developers now use AI coding tools daily. What started as a playful tweet to refer to "throwaway weekend projects" has become the subject of serious debate about the future of software, the value of technical skills, and even the sustainability of the open source ecosystem that powers the internet.
