Information Landscape Workshops | Healthy Skepticism: Evaluating Online Health Information in the Age of Reddit and TikTok

From trending health hacks on TikTok to deeply personal stories shared in Reddit communities, the internet has become a major source of health information and support. These platforms can be incredibly empowering, but the viral nature of social media also means that misleading or dangerous health claims can spread quickly and be hard to spot. This workshop explores the complicated landscape of online health information, helping you think critically about what you see and share. Through the lens of lateral reading—a strategy used by professional fact-checkers to verify online claims—you will learn how to investigate sources, cross-check information, and identify red flags. Using real examples from social media, we’ll walk through a step-by-step process for evaluating a health claim. At the end of this workshop, you’ll have practical tools for navigating the flood of online health content with greater confidence and care.
